Revised December 1, 2006

Goal
It is our goal to give White Knoll High School band students the best chance to be successful musicians who will strive to develop their skills on a continuing basis.

The Musicianship Program described is a means of monitoring the progress and development of each student against a common standard, and is designed to provide a set of tangible goals that students may reach. Every student in the band program will be classified according to the musicianship program criteria and provided with the information needed to progress to the next level. This system will be used to help determine chair placement, band placement, etc., and to motivate students to develop to their fullest potential.

Implementation
All students begin with Level 1. Students must complete all portions of a level within 30 days; if not, all completed portions of the level are voided and the student must start over. Brief extensions may be granted by the director due to unusual circumstances.

Responsibility
It is the student’s responsibility to obtain requirements for each level and to meet the requirements. All information will be made available, but the responsibility for passing off levels rests with the student.

 Results
The results of these auditions will be used for chair placement and music achievement decisions. They will have no bearing on grades in band classes, and therefore will be made public. This is intended to show students where they rank among their peers according to demonstrated musical skill and initiative.

  • Students must reach Level 2 to be considered for membership in the Wind Ensemble.
  •  Students must reach Level 2 to be considered for the Student Leadership Team.
    •  Students must reach Level 3 to be considered for the Section Leader and Senior Officers.
      •  Classifications will be used to determine seating order in classes. Between students of the same level, challenges will come from music in the folder.
        •  Award ribbons will be given upon the completion of each level. Students will wear these on the marching uniforms and concert wear.
          • Most other privileges will be awarded to band members based upon musicianship levels (room sign-ups, bus seating, eating, etc.).
            • Students who graduate as Master Musicians will be awarded a plaque and a scholarship; their name will also be inscribed on a plaque in the band room as a public record of their achievement.
